During an academic career spanning some forty years, Telford Taylor (1908-1998) served the Columbia Law School community with distinction first as an adjunct lecturer in law and later as a Professor of Law, (1963-1976), Nash Professor of Law (1974-1976) and Nash Professor emeritus of Law (1976-1998). Prof. Taylor maintained a fierce dedication to a life of the mind. In this spirit, therefore, we have planned a formal conference that will center on Professor Taylor’s career and the continuing impact of his work and writings. The panel sessions will cover the issues and values held most closely by Professor Taylor - the maintenance of international legal norms, the protection of civil liberties and the devotion to meticulous scholarship. Please join these distinguished members of the Columbia Law and university faculties, Telford Taylor’s former professional colleagues and alumni in what should prove to be a very special celebration.

The Telford Taylor Papers Conference represents the first event in a year-long collaborative partnership with the Truman Presidential Museum and Library, the American Jewish Archives and the Hebrew Union College-University of Cincinnati Ethics Center to commemorate the legacy of Nuremberg. The Truman Museum and Library will hold a teachers workshop titled: War Crimes & International Law: The Legacy of Nuremberg Summer Conference for Teachers (July 10-15, 2005), and The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives will sponsor a program and lecture in 2006 at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio.

We look forward to your attendance and thank you in advance for your support of the Telford Taylor Papers Conference. The Telford Taylor Papers represent an integral part of the Columbia Law School’s archival mission - to foster the global exchange of ideas, to promote world class scholarship, and to train highly skilled advocates.

Sincerely yours,
